V.League and the Data Gap: Vietnamese Football Is Being Analysed From Memory

In the 2026 season I carried a positional-coding notebook into a V.League 1 match. That same notebook once logged 200 Liverpool games, enough to count the average 2.1 gaps per match that Roberto Firmino opened for Sadio Mané and Mohamed Salah. After 90 minutes in Vietnam, it held six lines. The match was not dull. The problem was that I had nothing to check against: no xG, no PPDA, no touch map by zone, no tracking data to revisit after the whistle. The pitch never reads a textbook. From that day I began recording a different kind of data: the things I could not see.

Vietnamese football has a measurable paradox. National-team results are accelerating faster than the data infrastructure meant to serve them. Transfer fee, wage structure, contract length, release clause almost never surface. Without those facts, any judgement about squad quality is guesswork. A team can top the table because of genuine depth, or because one import is at peak form and will leave in six months. Those two scenarios lead to opposite conclusions about coaching quality, yet from outside they look identical.

Behind that sits process data. xG and xGA are not published consistently for the V.League, so "played well and lost" cannot be separated from "played badly and lost". In Europe that separation is elementary: losing with 2.1 xG against 0.7 is a different event from losing with 0.4 against 1.8. Without it, the media cycle collapses into a single variable — the result, which is the noisiest variable in football.

The outflow of players closes the loop. Nguyễn Quang Hải joined Pau FC in Ligue 2 in 2026. And the moment a gap opens, it is filled by transfer rumour — a product with near-zero production cost and a shelf life under a week.

I once read the regional drift toward a back three, V.League included, as tactical progress. Looked at closely, most cases are a response to reputational risk: when a back four is breached twice in a row, the back three arrives as a communications shield. There is no data to show the new shape is better or worse, so changing shape becomes the cheapest way to demonstrate that something was done.

What can be verified next season is concrete: if VPF publishes per-match touch and zone-occupancy data, will tactical writing in Vietnam multiply — or will new ways of justifying old results appear? After every piece, I go back to that old notebook. It is no longer a place where data is stored. It is a list of questions this league has not yet allowed anyone to answer.
